Quilt Africa Fabrics and The Quilt Africa Summit
I was so excited to be part of the Quilt Africa Summit in July this year. It was a fantastic experience with some great speakers including the wonderful Susan Carlson, who is a quilting hero of mine.
Being part of the the third annual Quilt Africa Summit (Link to Quilt Africa), is such a privilege and I felt really thrilled to be invited by Miriam to share my patterns for African fabric at this wonderful event.
This year i focussed on using African fabrics in a different way. Personally, I love colour and lots of it. but this year i wanted to focus on using fabric in a way that would sit well in a contemporary aesthetic. So I have teamed blue with white to create a sophisitcated table runner, and using the same pattern I have displayed the stunning African prints from four fat quarters in a crisp white and grey to establish a modern look. Yes, I had fun.
I’ve used very easy sewing and recutting methods to make the blocks which come out perfectly each time and look stunning in the African fabrics.
Here are some of my other African quilts. You can see just how easy it is to make a pattern look totally stunning with these fabulous fabrics. I’m always so stunned and excited when i cut into the fabrics to see how they will come out. Link to my african quilts on my pattern page
These quotes are from Nigeria, and what better way to celebrate the birth of a special child than with some pithy wisdom from the ages.
I do love this quilt. I was playing with fussy cutting to create secondary patterns, and it just glows.
This quilt is very dear to my heart, I made it to celebrate black history month and in particular to celebrate people who had a dream for a better world and then put it into action. They come from all countries and ages and races and genders, but each person has contributed to making the world a better place from the abolition of slavery to the eradication of obstetric fisula to putting a person on the moon.
I do love the way the African prints make blocks stunning. I don’t feel there are any other fabrics in my stash which give me such a ‘wow’ reaction when I use them. They just take design to a new dimension.
You can still access the recorded talks from the summit, and of course order fabric. Link to Quilt Africa, and if you would like to get a kit for my duet table runner here is the link Link to my pattern on Quilt Africa.
