A Seaside Adventure

Welcome to the ‘Seams to be Sew’ bloghop for 2021. The theme is ‘A Seaside Adventure’ and is a theme that was very dear to the heart of Marion Pena, the lovely organiser of this bloghop who sadly passed away earlier this year. The theme for the blog hop was decided in January and we quilt pattern designers wanted to continue with the bloghop as a tribute to Marion and to celebrate all she has done in the quilting world, and because we miss her. Melissa Shields from The Quilting Room with Mel kindly offered to take over the huge amount of organising and we are all very thankful for all her hard work.

Bucket and spade foundation paper pieced block

My block is a bucket and spade, foundation paper pieced. The skill level is intermediate. There’s not a lot that has to match perfectly, but there are quite a few small pieces. You can use any FPP method to make this block and I do love Heleen’s purple bucket. It looks awesome.

I have two other FPP seaside blocks on my website. One is a yacht which is good for beginners to paper piecing, and the other is more of an intermediate level because of the little pieces near the whale’s eye. These patterns are both paid patterns, but, for the next week I am donating half of the cost of each block to a cause dear to my heart.

Whale - Made by Jane Low

Whale - Made by Jane Low

I work with a number of refugees who escaped to Indonesia about 7 years ago. They can live in Indonesia but not stay there permanently so they are trying very hard to get visas for Canada or the USA. In order to get a visa they need to pass the GED certificate. Now, no matter what level of education and professional qualifications you have, it’s hard to pass a maths test in a second language, and this is where I come in. I teach students maths online, and its not easy for anyone! In order to help both the students and me, I want to purchase a substription to IXL ( which is an online maths tutoring system). If I can raise $300, I can purchase a class subscription for 25 students and 1 teacher for 1 year. This is my goal! If I raise more, I can look at other resources such as calculators and GED test preparation materials. So please enjoy the bucket and spade pattern, but if you would like to purchase the whale or yacht, I would really appreciate it.

Check out the free patterns from the other designers by clicking on the links below. Do leave a comment on each pattern, it really makes a difference, and every designer appreciates it. Don’t forget to add a note to your calendar because there are still many designers to come.
