Travel quilt blocks from Quilt block Mania

Nostalgia for former times! Wasn’t travel wonderful when we took it for granted!. I always love the moment when after getting to the airport, queuing for bagdrop, queuing for security, queuing for passport control, waiting at the gate, queuing at the gate, finally, you are on the plane and through the small porthole you can see the tails of the other planes waiting and ready. Actually after I wrote ‘queuing’ four times, I had a momentary flashback….. but being on the plane, ready to fly is still a buzz.

My block is simply pieced. The tail section requires templates, but it went together very easily. I’ve simply snowballed the corners to give the sense of the rounded window. Initially I did lovely quarter circles and curved piecing, but after I made it up, I decided a plane window wasn’t worth that much effort and I changed it to nice easy straight edges.

I do think we can get a bit blasé about travelling, or at least, we used to. Once when coming back from France, the lady next to me was flying for the first time ( and only spoke French). She was visiting her married daughter in Dubai and it was all very new and exciting to her. She was in the aisle seat and she was freezing. I think cold air was coming out of the lockers above her head. After the cabin crew couldn’t fix it, and she was still freezing, I offered to swap with her. Now, let’s think about it, I was in the middle seat, she was on the aisle …. who got the better of that swap? I still think it was me, but she was so grateful, and my French is definitely not up to explaining why an aisle seat is considered more desirable than a middle seat. Anyway, it was definitely a win-win because she was not only warmer, but she was closer to the window so we were all happy.

On landing in Dubai, she was so terrifically excited to see the other planes on the tarmac. One had been painted with zoo animals like a jungle scene, and it did look terrific. She was pointing them all out to me, so I didn’t miss a thing. Lesson for me: It’s easy to get blasé, but it’s so much more fun to just enjoy the moment whatever it is, and I hope you have a lot of fun picking fancy plane colours and jazzing up the (usually boring) plane interior.
